“Music is the universal language of mankind” - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
I am a student at The Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School and I’m committed to the art of music and making a difference to the lives of others, especially children. This is the epitome of Maestros and I believe this would be an eye-opening experience for me to learn and grow as a person by immersing myself in this amazing organisation.
Music has been a major part of my life from a young age. I attended my first piano lesson at the age of 4 and came out with a stack of shiny new piano books and a stuffed toy, and from then on it was love at first sight! At the age of 7, I wanted to try something different so I decided to learn the violin. It was great and felt quite different to piano, but I ended up with a lot of broken strings along the way, so I decided to return to the piano. In Year 7, I learnt the clarinet through our school’s class band program and enjoyed it thoroughly, even though I ended up breaking my reeds almost every month! I was amazed how different the skills needed for the clarinet were to the piano, but combining both instruments sounded heavenly. In Year 8, I learnt the guitar and drums through our class music program, and they were interesting instruments which enhanced my reflexes moving from string to string and learning to use varying degrees of power when hitting particular drums. In Year 9, I missed the clarinet greatly so I decided to join Mac.Rob’s Clarinet Ensemble. The pieces were tougher than what I had done previously, but I stepped up and practised hard to be on the same level as the other members. In the future, I aim to learn different instruments to challenge myself and learn new skills.
I’m so excited to be working with a group of incredibly talented girls to change the lives of these children and their families, and it just goes to show that we as high school students, can make a difference and impact people through our love of music.
